We left around 8am from Gaia and walked to São Bento, about 20 minutes. Tickets were easy at the machines and we checked times on Comboios de Portugal. Depending on the service, the train took about 60 to 75 minutes and cost around €7.20. Small warning: the station toilet charges €0.50, so carry coins.
We grabbed pastries and sandwiches at Urban Café in the station, then walked into the centre through Arco da Porta Nova. We tried Nata7 for an espresso and pastel de nata and, honestly, it is not great compared with Porto’s better-known nata spots. Fine if you just want caffeine and sugar. Braga itself felt tidy and calm, compact enough that you can wander without much of a plan and still feel like you have done plenty.
Slightly random observation: loads of wedding suit and wedding dress shops. It gave the centre a faintly ceremonial feel.
The outside is the best bit and very photogenic. We paid €3 each to go inside but do not remember much of it, which tells you everything. Lunch was a quick café stop at Nordia. Nothing memorable, which is fine.
This was the only mildly annoying part of the day. Google Maps said one thing, the bus seemed to be operating on its own logic. We waited more than half an hour and could not find a timetable that felt especially reliable. If you are doing this day trip, leave buffer time so it does not become irritating.
We walked up from the bottom instead of taking the funicular. The approach is calm, green, and full of shade, almost like being briefly dropped somewhere else. Then you hit the staircase and realise it is much bigger than it looks in photos. Properly magnificent, and by that point we were sweating a bit. At the top we went into the church, sat for a while, then looked out over Braga. Beautiful.
We got lucky and a bus was waiting at the bottom, so we took it back to the station and caught the train back to Porto. Back at the Airbnb: food, then a glass of port, slightly tired in the legs and very glad we went.
