Porto on Foot

Long walks from Gaia, beaches, and proper leg days.

These are our two favourite long walks from Gaia. One heads through the city and out to Matosinhos. The other follows the Douro until it opens into a longer Atlantic stretch. Both work well if you like walking, stopping for coffee, and letting the day take its time.

What we liked most about them is that neither needs much planning. You do not need a car, a guide, or a big itinerary. You just need decent shoes, water, and enough energy left for the walk back.

Choosing between them

If you want the bigger city-to-beach day, choose Matosinhos. It builds more gradually: Gaia, the edges of Porto, Avenida da Boavista (Boavista Avenue), Parque da Cidade (Porto City Park), then the beach opening up properly at the end.

If you want the calmer scenic version, choose Praia da Sereia. The route follows the Douro first and reaches the coast in a quieter way, so it feels gentler earlier on. It is still a long walk, just with more river and sea in the rhythm of it.

What to expect

Both routes are easy to follow, but they are long enough to become the day. Bring water from the start, wear shoes that can cope with uneven pavements, and do not treat the return as an afterthought. The distance adds up quickly once you include coffee stops, beach wandering, and small detours.

For us, these walks ended up being one of the best ways to understand Porto properly: crossing from Gaia, following the river or heading west through the city, stopping when somewhere looked good, and ending up tired in a very satisfying way.
